Thorold Stone Road to Gale Centre Officially Open

The long-awaited extension of Stanley Avenue to the Gale Centre was officially completed November 30, ending years of frustration for city residents on Fourth Avenue dealing with a steady stream of traffic to the four-pad arena. Cytec, the chemical company that operated the former Cyanamid plant where the Thorold Road extension runs through, has a lease agreement with Falls Community Development (FCD), a real estate firm run by the DiCienzo family that operates some major hotels in Niagara Falls. FCD approached the Region to pitch the idea of a partnership, handled land purchase, construction oversight and working with the province’s environment ministry. The Region and the City jointly contributed $4.5 million to the project that was years in the making. With hope, In the future the additional Cyanamid land will be developed into Light Industrial condo-style buildings and an extension of Stanley Avenue will connect directly with Victoria Avenue.
