Power Generation
Hydroelectric power harnessed by the Niagara River has powered Ontario for over 100 years. The Sir Adam Beck I generating station first came into service in 1921. Today, along with the Sir Adam Beck II generating station and Sir Adam Beck Pump Generating Station, 2221 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity are secured right here in Niagara Falls. Together with DeCew I and DeCew II, OPG's five Niagara hydro generating station meet 10% of Ontario's total energy needs.
In 2024, the Ontario government announced a $1 billion infrastructure program to secure an additional 1,700 megawatts of power by refurbishing Ontario's hydroelectric stations, including the Sir Adam Beck complex in Niagara Falls.
Power generation in Niagara Falls is supported by many firms, such as Hatch, a global engineering, project delivery, and professional services firm. Hatch purchased pioneering hydropower firm H.G. Acres in 2004 and today calls Niagara Falls the home of their global hydropower centre of excellence.
